Perplexity joins the $200 club with Max tier
The AI search company introduces Perplexity Max at $200 a month, following OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google into ultra-premium subscription territory.
Perplexity launches Max, a $200-per-month subscription with unlimited access to its heaviest features — Labs, priority access to frontier models, and early access to the company’s upcoming browser, Comet.
The notable thing isn’t the features; it’s the price. OpenAI set the $200 anchor with ChatGPT Pro in December, Anthropic followed with Claude Max, Google slotted AI Ultra at $250. An industry that spent two years arguing about whether anyone would pay $20 for AI has, in about seven months, standardized a tier ten times higher.
The bet underneath: for a segment of professional users, frontier AI access is no longer discretionary spending — it’s infrastructure, priced accordingly.
The record
Note that $200/month is quietly becoming the industry's standard 'power user' price point — four products now converge on the same number.
One year later — open only if you can handle spoilers
The $200 tier held up as the industry's premium anchor, and Perplexity kept climbing — a reported valuation in the tens of billions by late 2025 and a browser (Comet) that briefly made 'agentic browsing' the hottest product category.
