Amazon reportedly considering another multibillion-dollar investment in Anthropic

The e-commerce giant is said to be weighing additional funding beyond the $8 billion already committed, aiming to cement its position as one of Anthropic's biggest shareholders, ahead of Google.

Amazon is reportedly exploring another multibillion-dollar investment in artificial intelligence company Anthropic, according to the Financial Times, citing multiple people familiar with the discussions.

The e-commerce giant has already committed roughly $8 billion to the AI model builder — including a $4 billion commitment last November that doubled its stake. A new injection would cement Amazon as one of Anthropic’s largest shareholders, ahead of Google, which has invested more than $3 billion. Amazon declined to comment, citing a policy of not responding to rumors and speculation.

The contemplated investment would also deepen ties between the companies as they work on one of the world’s largest data center projects and collaborate on sales of Anthropic’s technology to Amazon’s cloud computing customers. Dan Grossman, Amazon’s vice president of worldwide corporate development, told the FT: “The size of the [existing investment] represents our ambition.”

The move signals the escalating capital alliances reshaping the frontier AI landscape: Amazon-Anthropic versus Microsoft-OpenAI versus Google. The FT noted that Microsoft’s $14 billion OpenAI investment gave those companies an early commercialization advantage, but that relationship is showing strain as OpenAI seeks to transition from a non-profit to a for-profit structure.

Citing multiple sources with knowledge of the talks, the FT reported that Amazon has discussed a multibillion-dollar injection into Anthropic, which would deepen a partnership crucial to both companies' futures.

Amazon's interest turned into a far larger commitment than this report implied. After a $13 billion Series F in September 2025 lifted Anthropic to a $183 billion valuation, Amazon agreed in April 2026 to invest up to another $25 billion — roughly $5 billion immediately and the rest tied to commercial milestones — pushing its total commitment to about $33 billion and the single largest outside stake, at a valuation near $380 billion. The expanded partnership was built on Amazon's Trainium chips and the "Project Rainier" compute clusters, and by mid-2026 Anthropic had filed confidentially for a US IPO.
